Buckley is a 4 year old Standardbred
(never paced) owned by Heather
Woodley and David Shaw.

Buckley didn't have the best start in life,
and when we got him as a 3 year old in
September last year he was skinny,
timid, had bad feet and was getting
bashed around by his paddock mate! He
was given to me by his previous owners
who didn't want him going to dog meat.
Although he hadn't been caught in 6
months, let alone put on a float or
anything, he travelled really well home
and with the good food and proper TLC

he soon picked up. Recently, with my other horse refusing to step foot on the
float, Buckley was at the last minute taken to the first WADYRA rally. This was
Buckley's 3rd ride off the lead rope EVER! And his first outing! I was a little
apprehensive but after some quiet walking around over the place he was fine.
He was VERY unbalanced, but he didnt put a hoof wrong behaviour-wise and
everyone was so shocked to hear it was his 3rd ride!
Since then I have been doing flat work with Buckley, teaching him to yield and
he walk, trots and canters around on the bit and has the most amazing rhythm
(even if he isn't the prettiest horse ever born!). He also does his bit carting
visitors from Japan and friends of mine around the bush, never spooking
(even when he saw the ostrich and my other horse wet her pants!!!). He has
also become a fantastic mount for my partner, for whom he was bought for -
the two of them are as green and laid back as each other and get along
marvelously!
Buckley is such a reliable horse that he was used for demos at WADYRA (the
photo shows him having his teeth inspected as part of an equine dentistry
lecture), float re-training my mare (who had an accident in the float so has
taken some reassurance!) as well as being a fantastic companion for the
mare who was getting lonely in her big paddock by herself.
Such an awesome natured horse, I'm so glad that he got his second chance
and is living the life he deserves.
